Navigating the human genome with first year students
For spring quarters 2023 and 2024, I had the unique experience of assisting in an undergraduate-level first-year seminar course-based undergraduate research experience (FYS-CURE) led by principal investigator Dr. Megan Dennis. We introduced basic molecular biology wet and dry labs to first-year freshman and transfer students to answer the question: What makes us uniquely human? By the end of the quarter, students put together a final presentation characterizing their human duplicated genes.
This experience solidified my interest in becoming a science faculty one day. Engaging with students in this course is one of the highlights of my undergraduate research career at UC Davis.
